RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AFP) — About 30 Chilean football fans were arrested Wednesday after breaking a door and rushing into the media centre at the stadium where their team were playing Spain in the World Cup.
The ticketless fans shattered the glass door and flooded into the media centre at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium ahead of the match.
“The fans forced the media door because they didn’t have tickets. They wanted to get inside the stadium but they were stopped,” security guard Diego Guillerme Souza told AFP.
Danielle Figueiredo, a Brazilian volunteer at the media centre, said the incident was “super scary.”
“It was an invasion of Chilean supporters with no tickets. They wanted to come into the media centre and watch the game for free. They smashed the door… I think there were as many as 100 of them,” she said.
FIFA spokesman Jorge Batista said about 30 Chileans had been arrested and others were “under police surveillance.”
An AFP correspondent saw police take away 24 young men, most wearing Chilean jerseys and holding up papers in front of their faces to avoid being filmed by cameras.
